10:00 am - Interesting Article in public health news Last weeks public health news stated
"For example, the charity Age Concern points to research published in January 2004 by Volterra Consulting which looked at the impact of not working on people who had retired. It found that retirement, particularly when it is involuntary through redundancy, dismissal or statutory retirement – is similar in its impact to bereavement. Workers feel they have nothing more to offer their employer."
"The resulting sense of loss and failure can lead to low self-esteem, often compounded by financial hardship. Depression and ill health may follow."
I was reading the article because it was about having to work until an older age, but the above paragraphs i thought were interesting as it must be worse with redundancy, ie they looked at a group of people and it was you they decided they didn't need anymore which means you must be crap!
And before anyone asks, do i think i will be made redundant soon, no rather the reverse, as my boss was crapping himself as he though that i was being "ill" as i had a job interview!

Unredundant? :P
My father retired due to ill health aged 52 five years ago and couldn't be happier, probably as he has a massive pension due to working for Pfizer :)
May be we should add due to ill health as a positive thing ? I mean it doesn't have any blame attached, both my parents have "retired" due to ill health and they seem very happy!
I was thinking of "retiring" this year, but Kuma wasn't that keen! So maybe in another 10 years :) Yeah, and if you live until you're 90 or whatever.... [I don't fancy living a life like my Gran who died at 97 beginning of this year] I'm an only child so I stand to inherit all my parents Land + House etc, but you don't see ME harboring any plans to 'retire' early...
I think you would be like my Dad and 'Spin out' if you retired tomorrow anyway...you wouldn't KNOW what to do with yourself !! |
